UK Authorities File Bribery Charges Against Diezani

Former OPEC President, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has faced charges of bribery stemming from her tenure as Nigeria’s oil minister, as announced by the UK National Crime Agency on Tuesday.

Alison-Madueke, who served as oil minister from 2010 to 2015, was not only the pioneering female to hold this position in Nigeria but also became the first woman to lead the global oil cartel, OPEC.

The UK National Crime Agency’s head of the international corruption unit, Andy Kelly, stated, “We suspect Diezani Alison-Madueke misused her authority in Nigeria and accepted financial inducements in exchange for granting multi-million pound contracts.”

Reportedly, the NCA claims that Alison-Madueke purportedly received a minimum of £100,000 ($127,000) in cash, chauffeur-driven vehicles, private jet trips, lavish family vacations, and the occupancy of diverse London apartments.

The expenditures also encompass non-monetary incentives such as furnishings, property renovations, staff for her residences, payment of private school tuition, and offerings from high-end luxury boutiques like Cartier and Louis Vuitton.

Kelly stressed the detrimental impact of bribery, stating, “Bribery is a widespread manifestation of corruption that fosters severe criminal activities and can lead to dire repercussions for developing nations. These charges mark a significant juncture in an exhaustive and intricate international investigation.”

Having been taken into custody in London back in October 2015, the 63-year-old former oil minister was later released on bail. According to the NCA, her court appearance in the British capital is scheduled for October 2.

Alison-Madueke’s legal representative conveyed her intention to vehemently counter the corruption accusations that have shadowed her throughout and following her tenure under former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Her family members disclosed that she has been residing in the upscale St John’s Wood neighborhood of north London since her confinement and has undergone treatment for breast cancer.
