United Kingdom Grants 132,000 Visas to Nigerians in the First Half of 2023

In a significant development, the United Kingdom has issued a total of 132,000 visas to Nigerian nationals during the first half of 2023, marking a substantial increase from the 324,000 visas granted throughout the entire year of 2022.

This surge in visa issuance accounts for a remarkable 10% share of all visas awarded by the UK during this particular period.

Jonny Baxter, the British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, attributes this substantial uptick in visa approvals to a confluence of factors. One primary catalyst is the robust economic ties binding the UK and Nigeria. Additionally, the increasing number of Nigerian students pursuing education in the UK has played a pivotal role in this surge.

Furthermore, Baxter highlights a recent pivotal policy shift in the UK government’s approach to student visas.

This policy alteration now enables students to bring their dependents along when they embark on their educational journeys to the UK.

This progressive shift is anticipated to trigger further growth in the number of Nigerian students choosing the UK as their study destination.

To offset the costs associated with visa processing and related services, the UK government has raised application fees.

Baxter emphasizes that this increase in fees is a necessary measure to ensure the efficient provision of services to visa holders.

In light of these developments, Baxter advises Nigerian applicants to submit their visa applications well in advance of their intended travel dates, as processing times may vary, potentially leading to delays.

This surge in visa issuance not only signifies the strengthening ties between the UK and Nigeria but also underscores the deepening economic and educational connections that continue to flourish between the two nations.
