Donald Trump suggests the possibility of negotiating the Civil War.

In a recent campaign event in Newton, Iowa, Former President Donald Trump suggested that the Civil War might have been averted through negotiations, expressing the view that the fight to end slavery in the U.S. was unnecessary. Trump proposed that Abraham Lincoln should have done more to prevent bloodshed, stating, “So many mistakes were made. See, there was something I think could have been negotiated, to be honest with you. I think you could have negotiated that. All the people died. So many people died.”

These comments come ahead of the first-in-the-nation caucuses in Iowa, where Trump leads in the polls over his rivals, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

While the Civil War has become an unexpected talking point in the GOP primary, Trump’s remarks were not in response to Haley’s earlier comments about the Civil War’s cause. Despite efforts before the war to reach a compromise and save the Union, the issue of slavery in the South proved uncompromisable, leading to the war. Trump did not provide details on how he would have prevented the conflict but described it as both “horrible but so fascinating.”

Trump’s comments prompted criticism from GOP figures, including former Rep. Liz Cheney, who questioned how Republicans endorsing Trump could defend his views on the Civil War. Traditionally, modern Republicans hail Lincoln as a hero for preserving the Union during a critical period in American history.
